GUIDELINES
Swimming Trials
Any students in Grades 4 - 6 can choose if they would like to trail for the Elwood PS Swimming team.
The events on offer are 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke & 50m Butterfly
Once all of the nominations are complete the students are split into age groups for each gender; 9-10, 11 & 12-13.
They can then choose to trial in any or all of the events where they compete against the other students in their age and gender category.
The 2 fastest swimmers in each age and gender category progress through to the District Carnival in freestyle & backstroke.
However only 1 swimmer from breaststroke and butterfly will qualify for the District Carnival.
There are also positions available in 4x50m freestyle relays. These relay teams are picked from the fasted times in all of the events, eg. The 4 fastest freestyle swimmers in an age group and category make up the 4 swimmers in that freestyle team.
Number of events students can compete in:
Students are only allowed to compete in a maximum of 2 individual events plus a relay in the Balaclava District Event. In the case of a student placing FIRST in 3 or more events at our swimming trails, they will have the opportunity to choose which 2 events they would like to compete in.
In all further competitions (Division, Region, State), again students are only allowed to compete in a maximum of 2 individual events plus a relay.
Please note: School Sports Victoria (SSV) rules state that nine year old swimmers cannot progress through to Division Swimming. They can only compete within District competitions.
House Swimming Carnival
Our house swimming carnival is a fun novelty event which is used to facilitate a wide range of entrants allowing maximum participation and enjoyment of swimming for all of our students. As it is a fun event for house points, students do not progress from this event.
We have a sign up afternoon where we allow all students to enter a maximum of 2-3 events which includes any relays. Ideally each of the students will get at least one of their preferences (this is not always the case however).
Unfortunately due the sheer numbers of students we have at Elwood PS, we have to limit the amount and types of events each student can compete in, regardless of swimming ability or whether students are part of squads outside of school. Therefore it is likely that some students may not get their preferences, so they need to be aware and prepared for this.
