Gr 5&6 sports Teams -
selection guidelines
Students choose a sport to play each term:
We are the biggest school in the Balaclava District and we allow both grade 5 and 6 students to take part in Inter-school sports. The students have the opportunity to choose the sport they would like to take part in for that term, however our Grade 6 students get priority of 1st choice. This does not mean they will automatically be selected for the A-Team in their sport. In the rare case a Grade 6 student does not get their first choice, they will not miss out again for the remaining terms.
Grade 5’s may get their 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice and the grade 5 students are not asked to leave a full sport unless it is full of grade 6’s. In some cases, we do ask for volunteers to be role models in being a good sport and move to their next choice. If this process does not work, we will then pull names out of a hat to move students into another sport.
A and B team selections
Students take part in practice sessions in the sport they have chosen. The teachers / coaches of those particular sports then select an A and B team. In most cases, the the A-Teams will be made up of a majority of Grade 6 students, however we also take into consideration ability levels and gender mixes (for mixed team sports). This ensures students end up playing against other students with the same ability levels, making their experience more enjoyable and aligning with our philosophy of sport. All other schools in the district also split their teams this way.
Football is the only sport where we split Grade 5’s in the B-Team and Grade 6’s in the A-Team. This is mainly for physical size and experience purposes.
Team Leaders
In most cases we have 2 captains per sport, as well as giving other students other leadership opportunities in both the A and B teams.
Teams who progress through the levels of competition:
Any of the A-Teams can progress to the next levels of competition (Division - Regional - State) if they are the overall winners on our Round Robin days. Our B-Teams play for fun and to build their knowledge and skills of the sport.
