athletics - selection
GUIDELINES
All of the students are split into age groups for each gender; 9-10, 11 & 12-13.
Due to the volume of students at Elwood PS, we name each group as A, B or C, however this is NOT an ability grouping.
In line with the Balaclava District, our policy for Athletics Team selection is that the TOP 2 students from each event in each age group for both genders are selected to compete at the Balaclava District Athletics Carnival. These results are determined at our Elwood PS House Athletics.
The participants for the 1500m distance run is determined during our Friday Athletics rotations at school as we do not run this event at our House Athletics Day.
The results for each event are compared across the A, B & C groups for each age group and the top 2 students across all groups then progress through.
In the event of our House Athletics carnival being cancelled:
The Grade 4-6 Students take part in Friday practices sessions where they rotate around the athletics events each week. Distances and times are recorded during these sessions and may be used to select the District Team in case our House Athletics day is cancelled for any reason.
Number of events students can compete in:
Students are only allowed to compete in a maximum of 2 individual events plus a relay in the Balaclava District Event. In the case of a student placing FIRST in 3 or more events in our House Athletics, they will have the opportunity to choose which 2 events they would like to compete in.
In all further competitions (Division, Region, State), students are only allowed to compete in a maximum of 2 individual events plus a relay.
Unfortunately if a student does not compete in a certain event or was absent from the Athletics day, they cannot be picked for the district team.
