Fair play Guidlines
Our Philosophy at Elwood is that all students take part and have a fair go. As we value participation by all students so highly, we try to offer our students as many opportunities to compete in school run sports as we can. This includes any Division, Region or State finals. It is also an opportunity for many students who do not play Representative or State sports outside of EPS to be involved in a team which has progressed to various finals.
We follow SSV guidelines regarding team selections where required (when team numbers have to be capped in higher levels), but mostly and wherever possible, we focus on participation and enjoyment of physical activity. This is achieved through experiencing many different sports throughout the year.
We are the biggest school in the Balaclava District and due to this we have large numbers of students in each of our sports teams. Our Fair Play Guidelines are designed to try and ensure we organise rotations within our teams so that all players have a fair go, and where possible fair amounts of game time. We will also try to arrange the rotations so we have as strong of a team on the playing area at any one time as possible.
While we are extremely happy and proud of any teams or individuals who win through various stages and progress through the SSV pathways, we do not explicitly play to win or put teams forward in competition to do so.
Any of our teams that progress through to Regional or State finals have done so by ensuring all players in the teams played a fair share of game time in these competitions. If a sporting team progresses to a higher level of competition, unfortunately in some cases we may have to cut some players from their team. This is due to the SSV’s capped number policy in some sports. If this is the case, we will meet with the team and explain the situation asking if any of the team members would like to give up their spot.
If this method does not work, our teachers/coaches will then make a decision taking into consideration ability levels and gender mixes. This procedure ensures students end up playing against other students with the same ability levels, making their experience more enjoyable and aligning with our philosophy of sport. We do this with our students’ best interests in mind and not in order to win.
At Elwood PS, the only way for any of our sports teams to progress is through the School Sports Victoria Pathway. This consists of Inter-School Sport > Balaclava District Finals > Beachside Division Finals > Southern Metropolitan Finals > State Finals.
We therefore do not enter teams into external competitions run by other sporting bodies. We feel this would conflict with our Inter-School Sports program and philosophy of not explicitly playing to win or putting teams forward in competition to do so.
The pathways for individual sports such as athletics and swimming are a little different to team sports. These pathways through the levels only allow the best individual (or in a relay, the fastest 4) athletes to progress. Therefore, the issue of fair amounts of game time does not apply as all students have the opportunity to be the fastest in these sports, and if they are, they can progress onto higher levels.
